Colombo to Kandy in 2026: every option compared
Short answer: by car it is 3 to 3.5 hours ($85 per sedan from the airport). Trains from Colombo Fort run again since 2 October 2026, but only as far as Peradeniya and Gampola — not into Kandy itself. Intercity buses are the cheapest option.

Train status (checked 18 October 2026): after Cyclone Ditwah the hill-country railway is reopening in stages. Nanu Oya – Ella – Badulla has run since 20 June 2026 and Colombo – Peradeniya/Gampola since 2 October 2026, but trains still do not reach Kandy (Peradeniya bridge rebuild) and nothing runs between Gampola and Nanu Oya. So the classic Kandy–Ella train is not possible yet — the driver takes you to Nanu Oya, you ride the most scenic part to Ella, and the car meets you there with the luggage.
When a private car is the better choice
Straight from a flight, with children or lots of luggage, or if you want Pinnawala or a spice garden on the way. From Kandy most travellers continue to Sigiriya (2.5–3 h) or to the tea country and Ella.
