The road
Local roads to Mirigama, the open section of the Central Expressway (E04) to Kurunegala (Kadawatha–Mirigama is still under construction), then the A6 via Dambulla. The last stretch is two-lane country road; elephants crossing near Habarana at dusk are a real thing, which is one reason drivers prefer not to rush it at night.
Worth stopping
- Dambulla cave temple is 20 km before Sigiriya — a good stop if you arrive in daylight.
Good to know
- Sigiriya opens early; climbing at 7:00 is cooler and quieter than at midday. The foreign-visitor ticket is about $35 (Central Cultural Fund rate, 2026).
