Colombo to Ella in 2026: train, bus or private car
Short answer: in October 2026 there is still no through train from Colombo to Ella after Cyclone Ditwah. The practical options are a private car (about 6 hours, $230 per sedan from the airport), a car to Nanu Oya plus the scenic train to Ella, or public buses — the cheapest, but most of the day.

Train status (checked 18 October 2026): after Cyclone Ditwah the hill-country railway is reopening in stages. Nanu Oya – Ella – Badulla has run since 20 June 2026 and Colombo – Peradeniya/Gampola since 2 October 2026, but trains still do not reach Kandy (Peradeniya bridge rebuild) and nothing runs between Gampola and Nanu Oya. So the classic Kandy–Ella train is not possible yet — the driver takes you to Nanu Oya, you ride the most scenic part to Ella, and the car meets you there with the luggage.
When a private car is the better choice
Night arrivals, families with luggage and groups of 3–6 (the price is per car), or if you want to stop at a tea factory or Ravana Falls on the way. With 7–14 days, a car with driver by the day is usually cheaper than separate transfers.
Worth stopping on the way
- A tea factory in the hills (short tour and tasting).
- Nanu Oya / Nuwara Eliya if you split the trip.
- Ravana Falls just below Ella.
