The road
A9 north through Matale, then Dambulla and the short road east to Sigiriya village.
Worth stopping
- Spice gardens around Matale (free short tour; buying is optional).
- Aluvihara rock temple just north of Matale.
- Dambulla cave temple — about 1 hour for a visit.
Good to know
- Climb Sigiriya Rock early (gates open at 7:00) or late afternoon; midday is hot and crowded.
- Pidurangala, next to Sigiriya, is the cheaper climb with the view of the rock.
