Sri Lanka private driver cost in 2026
Short answer: published 2026 rates for a car with an English-speaking driver run from about $50–75 a day for a sedan and $70–120 for a van. Ours are $95 for a sedan (up to 3 people), $125 for a KDH minivan (up to 6) and $160 for an SUV — per car per day, with fuel, tolls, parking and the driver's room and meals included.
Every trip is driven by a vetted local partner in Sri Lanka. Your confirmation names the driver, the car and its plate; on chauffeur-guide bookings also the SLTDA licence number.

Per person or per car?
Tour platforms often show “from $X per person”. We price the whole car: a sedan for two at $95 a day is about $48 each; a KDH minivan for six at $125 is about $21 each. The bigger the group, the cheaper per head.
Driver or chauffeur-guide?
A standard driver speaks English and knows the roads, but only licensed guides may guide inside sites. An SLTDA-licensed chauffeur-guide costs +$100 a day; a Russian- or German-speaking driver, when available, +$30 a day.
Season
December to April is high season on the south and west coasts and in the hill country; May to September is the east-coast season (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay). Our rates are the same all year, but the best drivers for December–March are booked early.
Tips
Tips are voluntary; many travellers give around $10 a day at the end of a trip if they were happy.
Train status (checked 18 October 2026): after Cyclone Ditwah the hill-country railway is reopening in stages. Nanu Oya – Ella – Badulla has run since 20 June 2026 and Colombo – Peradeniya/Gampola since 2 October 2026, but trains still do not reach Kandy (Peradeniya bridge rebuild) and nothing runs between Gampola and Nanu Oya. So the classic Kandy–Ella train is not possible yet — the driver takes you to Nanu Oya, you ride the most scenic part to Ella, and the car meets you there with the luggage.
