Ella in the southern hill country is the furthest common airport transfer: 230–300 km and 5.5 to 6.5 hours depending on the route. Worth it if you want to start in the hills and skip Colombo and Kandy.

Train status (checked 18 October 2026): after Cyclone Ditwah the hill-country railway is reopening in stages. Nanu Oya – Ella – Badulla has run since 20 June 2026 and Colombo – Peradeniya/Gampola since 2 October 2026, but trains still do not reach Kandy (Peradeniya bridge rebuild) and nothing runs between Gampola and Nanu Oya. So the classic Kandy–Ella train is not possible yet — the driver takes you to Nanu Oya, you ride the most scenic part to Ella, and the car meets you there with the luggage.
The road
Two ways: the Southern Expressway to its eastern end and up via Wellawaya (longer but faster), or inland via Ratnapura and Balangoda (shorter, slower, more scenic). The driver chooses based on the time of day and weather.
Good to know
- It is a long first day after a flight: we stop for a meal and breaks — the price includes stops.
- Arriving after dark, the last climb from Wellawaya to Ella is a winding mountain road; drivers take it slowly.
