From the airport: why most people take a car
Trains and expressway buses leave from Colombo, not from Bandaranaike airport, so after a flight you first have to get into the city. A private car goes from arrivals onto the expressways (E03, E02, then the Southern Expressway E01) without a change, and the price is per car, not per person.
The coastal train
The line along the west coast from Colombo Fort to Galle and Matara is one of the best train rides in Sri Lanka for sea views. Reserved first-class seats are limited; unreserved carriages get crowded at weekends. Fares and times above are approximate — check the timetable locally.
