The road
Usually inland via Ratnapura, Pelmadulla and Wellawaya, then east through Monaragala to Pottuvil (A4). It is a full day's drive with a lunch stop; the driver stays overnight and returns the next day (included in the price).
Worth stopping
- Buduruwagala rock carvings near Wellawaya.
- Elephants are often seen from the road near Lahugala, 20 minutes before Pottuvil.
Good to know
- Surfboards: take the KDH minivan, boards fit inside.
- Many surfers break the trip with 2–3 nights in Ella; Ella → Arugam Bay is then about 3 hours.
- From October to March the east coast is off-season and many places close.
