Train status (checked 18 October 2026): after Cyclone Ditwah the hill-country railway is reopening in stages. Nanu Oya – Ella – Badulla has run since 20 June 2026 and Colombo – Peradeniya/Gampola since 2 October 2026, but trains still do not reach Kandy (Peradeniya bridge rebuild) and nothing runs between Gampola and Nanu Oya. So the classic Kandy–Ella train is not possible yet — the driver takes you to Nanu Oya, you ride the most scenic part to Ella, and the car meets you there with the luggage.
The road
Either via Kandy and the Ramboda pass (A1 then A5), or via Avissawella and Hatton (A7) past the Kitulgala river valley and the St Clair's and Devon falls. The driver chooses by traffic and weather; both are mountain roads after the plains.
Worth stopping
- A tea factory on the way (many offer a short free tour and tasting).
- Ramboda Falls or St Clair's and Devon Falls, depending on the road.
Good to know
- Arriving at night? Many travellers sleep in Negombo or Kandy and drive up in daylight — the last two hours are winding mountain road.
- Horton Plains (World's End) is an early-morning trip from Nuwara Eliya; ask for a car for the day.
